Toilet Repair
We may have come a long way in the plumbing world. However, toilets are not much more complicated than outhouses. In fact, the two main components of a toilet are the fill valve that supplies the water to the tank and the flush valve that supplies the water to the bowl. Most toilet repairs will involve one of these components.
Now, the first step in your toilet repair will be diagnosing the problem. Just because you are having problems flushing, does not mean that you have a problem with the flush valve. Both the fill valve and flush valve have an affect on flushing and filling. This means it can be attributed to one or the other, or both.
If you are having a problem with water running constantly in your toilet, it may be a couple things. Your fill valve may be set to a water level that is too high. This can send water into your overflow tube creating a situation where the water never reaches the required level to stop. This toilet repair is corrected by simple adjusting the water level on the fill valve, usually by turning a screw.
Another reason for water continuing to run is a flush valve that is need of repair. This is caused when the flush valve does not close all the way leaking water into the toilet bowl and causing the fill valve to keep supplying water. This is fixed by either replacing the flush valve or sometimes it only requires a good cleaning.
When making certain toilet repairs, it might be necessary to drain the water from the tank. This is done by first turning of the water supply to the toilet. You can than flush the toilet to drain the water from the tank. This will leave you with a dry area to perform any cleaning and replacing of parts. You’ll find that many toilet repairs can be caught by just taking off the top of the tank and observing the process.
