Tent Repair

There are many things you can attempt to fix yourself. You may be able to fix a leaky faucet, a squeaky wheel, or a door that won’t close, but how do you fix a tent? Tent repair actually is not that difficult to do yourself. You just have to make sure you have the right supplies.

For your tent repair you will need two patches of heavy duty nylon, seam-sealing glue, and a sewing machine. Tent repairs should not be attempted on tents that are necessary for your survival in the wilderness. These include tents that will be protecting you from extreme weather where you have no alternative source of shelter and are deep in the wilderness.

However, for all other tent repair situations, you can rely solely on the three items mentioned above. Two patches are necessary for each hole or tear in your tent. You will be gluing the patches to both sides of the tear or hole in your tent. This is the first part of your tent repair.

To reinforce the patches, you will need to stitch all the way around the tent repair at the outer edges of the patch. Inside the stitched border you will now be sewing a zigzag pattern through the middle just to ensure that the patches stay in place. The stitches should then be reinforced with the seam-sealing glue for waterproofing.

As with any repairs, the strength of your tent repair will be determined by the quality of the supplies you use. These supplies such as the nylon patches can be found at most camping supply stores along with seam-sealing glue. Additionally, the sewing adds tremendously to the strength of the tent repair. If you don’t know how to sew, you should consider finding someone to do this for you because it really does reinforce the tent repair.
