Leather Repair
Leather repair can be pretty expensive. This isn’t because leather repair is a difficult job, but because the professional knows how it’s done and you don’t. Like many other repair problems, you can save money by learning a few steps that are not difficult to master. However, you must also find a good place to shop for leather repair supplies. If you don’t live near one, you can find a lot of places on line.
The first step in repairing a scratch or gouge in your leather is to treat the area with heat. The heat in combination with sanding of the spot, will make the spot level with the rest of the leather’s surface. This can be cone on furniture, briefcases, or another other item that has sustained damage.
Now, the second step is filling the scratch or gouge. This is also to make the spot level with the rest of the leather. The amount of filler used will be determined by the depth of the gouge or scratch, but the next step will be a sanding of the filler. Filler made especially for leather repair should be used.
It is now time to apply your base coat. This is a base coat that may or may not match the color of the leather you are repairing. Depending on whom you listen to and what products you are using, you may be able to stop at this step. Some compounds are meant to be a one coat leather fix, but others may require a coat of color that is closer to the leather’s color and a clear top coat. The key is following the directions for the products you are using for your leather repair.
Whatever type of leather repair process you choose, always follow the manufacturer’s advice. Remember if you have doubts, it may be better to take it to a professional. You can also get rid of some of your anxiety by trying it out on a leather object that is not as valuable to you.
