The gas tank repair is probably one of the scariest repairs you can make. This is because of the high flammability involved with the gasoline. Yet, gas tank repair is a necessity to any vehicle owner who finds they have a gas leak.

One thing to remember when conducting your gas tank repair is safety. Obviously you wouldn’t want to smoke while you were repairing or cleaning your gas tank. Even with a tank that has been cleaned, you wouldn’t want to try welding it.

So, what are your options? Well, there are different substances that you can try patching a gas tank repair with. You can even add a sealant to the inside of the tank. However, you first want to decide where the leak is.

Some gas leaks will not require a complete removal of the gas tank while other gas tank repairs will. If you have a leak around the seam, you may be able to just patch the seam. If the leak is in the tank itself you should treat the inside of the tank.

To perform your gas tank repair follow the instructions with the product you use. This may be epoxy putty, or a substance that comes with a gas tank repair kit. However, before applying the substance you should clean the area.

Rust is one of the problems that cause the need for gas tank repair. Just as you wouldn’t treat a sneeze without treating the cold, you wouldn’t want to ignore the rust. This is why cleaning should take place before you seal. This will get rid of the rust using an acetone and maybe some sand paper.

If your gas tank repair is extensive or severe, you may need a whole new tank. If this is the case, it is better to spend the money on a new or used gas tank than to spend money on gas tank repairs and turn around and have to pay for a new or used gas tank because the repairs did not hold up.
