DVD Surface Repair

Do you have a lot of DVD’s that won’t play? Do they have a lot of scratches and nicks? Well, there may be hope yet. DVD surface repairs can be performed on some of the most worn out DVD’s. Even after the point you think they are too far gone.

In fact, DVD’s consist of an aluminum medium that contains the video information. The surface surrounding this medium may become scratched and cause the laser to skip while reading the medium, but as long as the aluminum has not been damaged, the surface can be sanded and polished down.

Now, to find out whether your DVD is truly beyond DVD surface repair, hold the DVD up to the light. Upon examination of your DVD look for any scratches that do not have a reflection. Scratches on the surface of the DVD should be reflected on the medium creating a double likeness. If there is a scratch so deep that it does not have this reflection, it may be beyond DVD surface repair. This is because the aluminum may have been damaged.

Now, there are different ways of performing DVD surface repair. There are kits you can buy that will provide a buffing type solution. This would be sort of like waxing a car. There are also repair places that will wet sand your DVD’s giving them an almost brand new quality. There are also do-it-yourself remedies such as toothpaste or turtle wax.

You do need to remember that each time you sand down your DVD surface, you are left with less to work with. The DVD becomes thinner and thinner. This leaves the DVD more vulnerable, so take extra caution. When using any home rememdy or store bought kit, be careful. Only use motions going from the center of the DVD outward. Never go in a circular motion around the DVD. Water is never a good thing to use on you DVD’s.
