Book Repair
Some book repair places charge $40 an hour to restore your favorite books. However, some of these repairs can be done at home by your own hands. Book repairs such as tears, holes, and damaged spines are some examples of book repair you can do on your own.
Repairing a tear is probably the easiest book repair. For this task you will need a good quality rice paper, acid free glue, and wax paper. The rice paper will be folded around the tear and bond using the glue. The wax paper is placed between the page being repaired and the rest of the book to keep it from contacting the glue. You can then close the book and place it under a few heavy books.
The principal around fixing a hole is the same as the above book repair. You will use the book repair supplies in just the same manner. This time, instead of folding the rice paper around the page, you will use two pieces of the rice paper that are slightly larger than the hole to place on both sides. These pieces will also be held by the glue and wax paper can be used to prevent other pages from contacting the glue.
Now, the most difficult book repair that you can still do at home is repairing a damaged book spine. However, the method is very similar to that used with the above book repairs. You will be using the acid free glue to bind the spine back into place and the wax paper will protect the first and last pages of the book or any other pages that might come into contact with the glue. When you are finished gluing the spine, you will need to wrap it in wax paper and use an ace bandage to keep the spine in place while drying. All of the repairs are fairly simple and will save you a little money, but if you aren’t sure if you can do it without damaging your book than you should take your book to a professional book repairer.
